Ameri-Cana Relay
August 16-17

This relay was the an inaugural from Nelson, British Columbia to Coeur d Alene, Id.  A total of 220 miles were covered with 12 runners each running three legs plus two running an extra one a piece.  This was a much different than running the Hood to Coast because of the terrain but more significant was the number of teams.  There were only 15 teams in this first running, ranging from the casual walkers to the speedsters from Vancouver, BC.  Our team was a mixed-masters team, meaning all over 40 with six women and six men.  The addition of having 38 legs meant that no one knew for sure they were done until the last two leg runners were picked.

The weather was a significant factor in this run.  The prediction was that it would be cool and/or raining on Friday.  That did not happen and Friday it was clear and up to 80 degrees.  Saturday was much different, getting up to 89 degrees.  The night run was very comfortable, cold at the start of each leg but warm enough to keep the runner comfortable.  Saturday afternoon saw the weather take a bit of a toll.  Starting with Corinne and going through Marnie, Jim, Jake and Gary, the temperature was high leading to support stops every mile with ice, water, Gatorade and singing by Corinne.

The team members were:  Scott Wray, Captain; Jake Collins; Gary Nichol; Shirley Sours (Scott's sister); Sharlee Nichol (Gary's guiding light); Carol Dugan; Pat Klein; Gailmarie Berquist; Steve Lay; Corinne Hendren; Jim Klein (Pat's brother) and Marnie Harden.

Below are some of the pictures from the event.  I am sure there are more that may be posted or are available.
